Overview

The Aesir’s Lost is a Diablo style RPG I created a prototype for in Late 2019/Early 2020. The premise of the game was to have a point and click combat system, but with a more immediate inventory system where the player could only hold 2 items at any time, to see if that level of realism could increase immersion and enjoyment.

Inspiration came from shows such as The Last Kingdom and Vikings where characters would often scramble around the battlefield looking to replace dropped and broken weapons.

For the demo I removed the feature that had weapons break, as a common scenario occurred where the Player and Enemies were just punching each other to death. While that may be what happened in actual battles, it really slowed down the game and ruined the enjoyment, so only the shields remained destructable.

Tasks

  • Creating point and click style movement utilizing Unity’s NavMesh system.

  • Implementing a pick up and drop system for weapons.

  • Making shields breakable so the player must be aware of their shield’s integrity and plan accordingly.

  • Creating a checkpoint system that activates AI characters so they are alrewady active when they appear on screen.

  • Making an interesting level for the player to navigate through with increasing challenge as the progress.

  • Balancing the game’s combat mechanics to allow a variety of play styles to be viable options.
